The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
