Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
